The History of Chakras

The foundation of the chakras originated in Hinduism. They date back to around 1000 BC from the Vedas, ancient sacred texts of spiritual knowledge. Ayurveda and Yoga are traditional holistic medicine practices that focus on chakras.

Chakras are the interconnected primary energy centers or energy portals of our “subtle body” and reside within our physical body. It is thought that the chakras control our physical body. Nadis are the energy channels flowing through the subtle body and connected by the chakras. Nadis correspond to nerves but are not part of the physical body.

The “subtle body” is referred to as the vibrational energy system that flows within us and consists of mind, intelligence, ego, the unconscious, the subconscious, and the supra-conscious. It's is the non-physical body.

Chakra means “wheel” or “disc” or ‘wheel of light” in Sanskrit. They are thought to be spinning disks, like vortexes, cones, or funnels of energy that spin at great speed and different vibrational frequencies. The cones are all connected at the deepest point along the spine, and extend out in all directions, exchanging energy from outside, known as the Universal Life Force, or Prana, and releasing unneeded energies from within.

The chakras have the power to vitalize the body and mind. When they're flowing freely, we tend to feel light and well. When one is blocked, however, we can feel off in many ways, depending on which chakra isn't flowing.

Traditionally, there are seven main chakras running down the spine. They are represented by a number, color (based on the energy vibrations), and area. The energy point of each chakra corresponds to bundles of nerves, major organs, physiological body systems, energies and levels of consciousness. They play an important role in the spiritual, emotional, intellectual and physical levels and well-being.

Crown Chakra - (Sahasrara) is the seventh chakra, located at the very top of the head. It relates to our ability to be fully connected to the divine. When this chakra is balanced and flowing, you feel tapped into a higher state of consciousness and a general connectedness to divinity. When it's blocked, you may feel disconnected from your spirituality, higher power, or the universe in general.

Third Eye Chakra - (Ajna) is the sixth chakra, located between the eyes. It relates to our ability to see the big picture and access intuition. When this chakra is balanced and flowing, you feel intuitive, imaginative, and wise. When it's blocked, you may experience difficulty accessing intuition, as well as feel unimaginative or have a hard time visualizing the future.

Throat Chakra - (Vishuddha) is the fifth chakra, located in the throat. It relates to expression, truth, and communication. When this chakra is balanced and flowing, you are easily able to communicate and express your truth. When it's blocked, you may struggle to communicate what it is you feel or truly want to say.

Heart Chakra - (Anahata) is the fourth chakra, located in the center of the chest. It relates to love—both giving and receiving, to ourselves or others—as well as joy and peace. When this chakra is balanced and flowing, you feel loving, compassionate, and joyful. When it's blocked, you may feel disconnected from others or disconnected from love and joy in general.

Solar Plexus Chakra - (Manipura) is the third chakra, located in the upper abdomen. It's related to themes like self-worth, self-confidence, and self-esteem. When this chakra is balanced and flowing, you feel confident, empowered, and a general sense of freedom. When it's blocked, you may feel shame, self-doubt, or hopeless.

Sacral Chakra - (Swadhisthana) is the second chakra, located in the lower abdomen, roughly 2 inches below the navel. It's related to our sense of abundance, well-being, pleasure, and sexuality. When this chakra is balanced and flowing, creativity and sexual energy flow easily. When it's blocked, you may feel a lack of control in your life or like your creativity or sexuality are stifled.

Root Chakra - (Muladhara) is the first chakra, located at the base of the spine. It's related to our general sense of security and safety, relating to things like survival issues. When this chakra is balanced and flowing, we feel grounded, secure, and safe. When it's blocked, we feel ungrounded, afraid, or threatened.
